TBCs on the other hand, aren't necessarily whole-field/frame, and up to a point are only re-timing a handful of lines at a time (dating back to a time when memory was expensive and slow). it seems odd, although I don't know how the image is being processed, one would assume that a form of whole-image memory field has to be involved and from that it would follow that a frame synchronizer would be an obvious bonus derivative. I think BlackMagic are missing a trick here because good (ie: "proper") TBCs are now becoming quite rare.Īgree. I should add that if I take a SD composite output from one of my two DVCAM machines (one a Sony DSR-40P, the other is a Panasonic AJ-D455 DVCPro/DVCAM) then the signal pass is OK and the Teranex locks up OK.Ĭolin Barrett wrote:It does bug me that you can't give the Teranex an off-tape composite analogue signal without previous TBC though. That's only a guess, though, as I haven't tried it. However, I would guess that the output from both the Laserdisc and VHD would be OK as their outputs should be stable.

One of my VHS machines is a JVC BR820 professional edit recorder, but as it doesn't have the optional TBC card I'm having to pass the output through either my G2 MSTC or For-A TBC first. So, your VHS input will require timebase-correcting first. The issue, from where I'm sitting, is that it won't lock up a non-synchronous input. I would assume so because from what I can see the two models are basically the same under the hood, except that the 3D can process dual-streams for 3D.įrom what I can determine, the 2D's input port itself is OK and will handle a composite SD video input without a problem - but has to be stable (hence the fact that it passed test bars from an SPG without problem). What is it about the Teranex 2D that prevents it from properly handling a straight SD composite signal without prior TBC? Surely this is something that the Teranex should be able to do - basic timebase correction? After all, broadcast-spec TBCs are rare and also very expensive and many people in the video business these days don't even know what they are!

But I shouldn't have to do that - and it adds one more processing stage to the chain. The only way I can get round this is to feed the signal via a separate G2 MSTC Timebase corrector - which also enables the input of S-Video sources (which the Teranex can't handle) - and then onward to the Teranex as YUV Component. The socket is OK though because it works as one of the three component inputs. The picture just jumps around and the Teranex doesn't seem interested in correcting it. But if I give a composite analogue SD off-tape signal to the composite BNC input, I can't get a picture lock whatever I try. SD-SDI with embedded audio works great, and YUV Component input is OK too. In most cases I've been able to take either a SD-SDI or YUV Component output from the tape machines and feed it to the Teranex 2D. I've just finished a large professional-standard library archiving job from Beta-SP and DVCAM.
